Cover Versions

As a journalist, one of the best things about working outside the US has been the persistence of physical news media. Print magazines, newspapers, even if their circulations are declining, they remain unavoidable. Including flea market commodities, like these copies of Der Spiegel, in east Berlin, last March.

One of my favorite French magazines has always been Charlie Hebdo. For as long as I can remember, the satirical political newsweekly has always run biting, illustrated covers every progressive magazine ought to aspire to. Even those periodicals which lack strong visual design emphases. Paris, 01/10.
